Try the best Sauvignon Blanc in Italy: Sesto 21 – Casata Merge

August starts with a tasty recommendation of Sauvignon Blanc. How about a fresh, refreshing wine with concentrated flavors? Moreover, it is an award-winning wine that it is said to be the best Sauvignon Blanc of Italy - it received this distinction in the "Annuario dei Migliori Vini Italiani Luca Maroni" 2024, 99 points.

"Sesto 21 Sauvignon Blanc" is a wine from Casata Merge winery that comes from Lazio region in central Italy. The region is located in the hilly area south of Rome and is cooled on the one hand by the altitude and on the other hand by the many lakes in the area, thus offering suitable conditions for the cultivation of white grape varieties.

Casata Merge is a winery established in 1960 that has vineyards on the border between Frascati and Monte Porzio Catone, in an area with a Mediterranean climate.

In the first half of the twentieth century, Manlio Mergè began winemaking while respecting the culture and historical characteristics of the area. Today, Luigi Mergè, with his children Massimiliano, Mariabeatrice and Marianna, after four generations, continues to keep that first graft alive, keeping the family roots intact, producing wines respecting traditions but keeping up with the most advanced technologies.

Tasting notes Sesto 21 Sauvignon Blanc 2022

The wine has a lemon-yellow color with green reflections and the aromatic intensity is pronounced – once the wine is in the glass, you feel its aroma before you approach the glass.

On the nose, we can distinguish aromas of grapefruit, lemon and lime, green apples, gooseberries, but also aromas of acacia flowers, as well as peaches and melon.

The wine is dry, with high acidity. It is full-bodied and the flavors are very concentrated. Aromas of lemon, grapefruit, apricot, minerality and a few vegetable notes (bell pepper) can be distinguished. The wine has 13% alcohol which is well integrated; the aftertaste is long.

We initially enjoyed the wine slightly cooler, at 7°C, but it was more expressive in terms of taste and smell when it reached 10°C.

The wine can be enjoyed as it is, being very concentrated in terms of fruit (primary aromas), but it can also be served with food. We recommend dishes such as cheeses, pasta, seafood, sushi or paella.

In addition to the 99 points obtained from Luca Maroni, the wine received the Double Gold Medal in Japan at the Japan Women's Wine Awards 2024.

The wine is imported by Limone and can be found in their showroom in Bucharest or in the online shop www.limone.ro
