Frescobaldi – wine producer with a history of over 700 years

With over 700 years of history and 29 generations, Frescobaldi is one of the oldest wine producing families in the world and its story is closely linked to that of Tuscany.

In medieval Florence Frescobaldi family spread their influence as bankers, gaining the title of treasurers of the English crown and with the flourishing of the Renaissance era, they became the financiers of some far-reaching works in Florence, such as the construction of the Santa Trinita bridge and provided the land for the construction of the Basilica Santo Spirito (by Brunelleschi).

The Frescobaldi family incorporates several domains in the territory of Italy, and today I am happy to tell you its story. And if you want to try Frescobaldi wines, you must know that they are brought to Romania by Parmafood Group Distribution and you can find them in the Parmashop online shop.

Among the important things to mention in the history of Frescobaldi are:
  • In 1500, Frescobaldi financially supported a campaign by King Maximilian I of Augsburg.
  • Frescobaldi had important relationships with King Henry VIII and the Royal Court.
  • Donatello and other Renaissance artists used to request Frescobaldi wines.

Today the Frescobaldi name is associated with the 9 domains they own in Tuscany (Gorgona, Tenuta Castiglioni, Tenuta Castelgiocondo, Tenuta Ammiraglia, Tenuta Perano, Tenuta Calimaia, Remole, Castello Pomino, Castello Nipozzano), as well as well-known names such as: Masseto, Ornellaia, Tenuta Luce, Attems, Danzante and even the Laudemio olive oil brand

At the same time, Frescobaldi owns two restaurants: one in Florence, another in London.

Frescobaldi cultivates the diversity of Tuscany and relies on sustainability

The fact that Frescobaldi owns several domains in the Tuscany region makes them very diverse in terms of wines, precisely because of such different climates. When there is still summer at Tenuta Ammiraglia on the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea, at the same time at Castelo Pomino the first snowflakes of the year can fall.

Frescobaldi cultivates the diversity of Tuscany and takes into account the terroir specific to each place:

“We want the family estates, with their vineyards, to be the expression of this diversity and for the wines to reflect each individual terroir, respecting their nature and authenticity.

Diversity is also a promise of pure tastes, from wines to olive oil to the dishes cooked in our restaurants.”
Frescobaldi uses the principles of integrated production and sustainable agriculture in all its activities and since 2012 their fields have received the "AgriQualità" certification from the Region of Tuscany.

The AgriQualità certification is granted for the use of ecologically sustainable agricultural techniques compatible with the protection of the natural environment.

In order to have a sustainable production, to reduce the use of glass, water and electricity consumed in production, as well as carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions during production and transport, Frescobaldi uses a new type of environmentally friendly, lighter bottles. Thanks to these new bottles, they predict that the CO2 reduction for a year should be around 350 tons.

From the point of view of the electrical energy consumed, the fields in the Frescobaldi portfolio use photovoltaic systems as a source of renewable energy.

Domains owned by Frescobaldi

In Romania we find wines from several domains belonging to the Frescobaldi family, and below you can find a brief description of them.

Tenuta Castiglioni, Montespertoli – the story began here 700 years ago

The Castiglioni estate is located on the gentle hills of Val di Pesa. The typical fresh, clay soils here are ideal for highlighting the fruit in the wines.

Tenuta Castiglioni has been owned by Frescobaldi family since the 11th century and documents found indicate that they have been producing wine since 1300. The property stretches along the ancient Via di Castiglioni built by the Romanians to unify northern Tuscany with Rome.

Castello Nipozzano

Castello Nipozzano is located in the heart of the prestigious Chianti Rufina area and represents the ancient defensive fortress of Florence since the year 1000. Castello Nipozzano is today the most celebrated and historic property of the Frescobaldi family.

The name of the castle comes from the word Nipozzano which means "without well", proof of the lack of water in the area. The first documents mentioning Nipozzano's famous wines date back to the Renaissance when artists such as Donatello and Michelozzo Michelozzi regularly bought wine from the estate.

A unique feature of the area is attributed to the foresight of an ancestor of the Frescobaldi family who, in 1855, invested 1,000 florins to start the cultivation of varieties unknown until then in Tuscany, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. After more than a century of patient tending, these magnificent vines produce the estate's great wine, Mormoreto

Castelo Pomino – The hidden gem of Tuscany

The Pomino estate dates back to 1500, the year in which the castle with the same name was built. From the beginning it was renowned for the excellence of its location. In 1716 the Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici identified the four most valued territories of Tuscany for wine production. The Pomino domain was mentioned alongside Chianti, Carmignano and Val d'Arno di Sopra. The announcement from that time was considered the precursor of the modern designation of "DOC" (Denominazione di Origine Controllata,/Denomination of Controlled Origin).

Today the castle is a hidden gem, surrounded by redwoods, firs and chestnuts and vine plantations that climb to an altitude of 700 meters.

Tenuta CastelGiocondo, Montalcino

Castel Giocondo is one of four properties dating back to 1800, when Brunello di Montalcino production began. It is an ancient fortress built in 1100 to defend the road leading from the sea to Siena. The CastelGiocondo estate is located at an altitude of approximately 300 meters, an ideal terroir for the production of Sangiovese.

It is the largest domain in Montalcino and has carefully selected vineyards: south-west exposure, altitude of 350-450m and well-drained soils.

Tenuta Ammiraglia – Tuscany by the sea

In the middle of the Maremma region is Tenuta Ammiraglia, a land warmed by the sun and caressed by the sea breeze. If in the other areas of Tuscany we are used to hilly landscapes, here the nearby sea marks it’s place and the vineyards of the winery pierce the nearby Tyrrhenian coast.

The Ammiraglia estate is a place of undeniable natural beauty, located in a territory with great potential for the production of high quality wines.

The wines of the Ammiraglia winery that you can also find in Romania are here.

Remole

Built in 1300 along the Arno River, this historic house named Remole belonged to the ancestors of the Frescobaldi family.

The wines of the Remole winery that you can also find in Romania are here.
