Stories Heard at Home and Other Memories - Book of the Month August 2025
The book "Stories Heard at Home and Other Memories of the Știrbey, Bibescu and Costinescu Families" published by Corint Books is a dialogue between Ileana Kripp Costinescu and Cătălin Strat.
Wine and history lovers will be delighted by this volume of memoirs structured in the form of a conversation about some of the most important boyar families in Romanian history: Știrbey, Bibescu and Costinescu. All of these families contributed significantly to the formation of modern Romania through their involvement in politics, economy and culture.
The storyteller is Ileana Kripp Costinescu, granddaughter of Princess Maria Știrbey - eldest daughter of Prince Barbu Al. Știrbey. Princess Maria Știrbey inherited the Drăgășani vineyard in 1946. The property was nationalized in 1949 and taken over by IAS Drăgășani, but in 2001 the vineyards and the winery were returned to the heirs.
Baroness Ileana Kripp wanted to relaunch the tradition of the Știrbey vineyard and, together with her husband, Baron Jakob Kripp, renovated the vineyards, equipped the winery with modern technology and today we can all enjoy the wines of Știrbey winery from Drăgășani.
Born in 1954, Ileana Kripp Costinescu grew up in Sinaia and Bucharest among grandparents, uncles and aunts who always had something to tell about their past lives: fabulous travels, forbidden loves, political intrigues, exemplary biographies, high society happenings.
Reasons to read the book: The book reveals a delicious history of the 3 families, the story being told according to the memories kept alive by Ileana. It is not a book written by a historian, but by an ordinary person who was part of a family with a rich history.
Where you can find the book: online on Cărturești website and in bookstores across the country.
