Discover Bulgarian wines at Urban Wine Fest, Ruse on September 26-27, 2025

October 26th is International Mavrud Day 🍇, a Bulgarian grape variety that is recognized beyond the country's borders.

Bulgarians have decided to celebrate this grape variety for a whole month in a festival taking place in several cities - Urban Wine Fest:
  • Ruse (September 26-27),
  • Plovdiv (October 3-5),
  • Varna (October 10-11),
  • Veliko Tarnovo (October 17-18),
  • Sofia (October 31-November 1).
The International Mavrud Day is an initiative of Northeastern Bulgaria – Bulgarian Association of Wine Professionals and is held under the patronage of the Minister of Tourism, with the official support of the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Municipality of Ruse and Mastercard.

The first festival takes place in Ruse, on September 26-27th 2025.
On Friday, September 26th, the event takes place between 4 pm and 10 pm, and on Saturday, September 27th, between 2 pm and 10 pm.

The festival takes place in the center of Ruse, on Svoboda Square in front of the Palace of Justice, at the festival’s wine bar, set up by the Bulgarian Association of Wine Professionals (BAWP) team, where you can enjoy a selection of over 40 wines from 15 local varieties.

The festival focuses on wines from the Mavrud variety, as well as wines from other local Bulgarian varieties. So if you haven’t had the opportunity to try Bulgarian grape varieties before, this year you can discover them at this festival.

This year Urban Wine Fest Ruse has a surprise for both the Bulgarian and Romanian audiences. At Urban Wine Fest Ruse we have the pleasure of being present with some Romanian wines. Yes, you read that right, alongside Bulgarian wines, we will be presenting some Romanian grape varieties through wines signed by wineries from Vintruvian Estates group (Caii de la Letea, Crama DeMatei, Olterra, Crama Histria) and Crama de Piatră.

Along with Anelia Hristova, Dilyan Kolev, Carmina Nițescu and Cezar Ioan we will be presenting two masterclasses that will feature both Romanian and Bulgarian wines:
  • 🍷“The importance and the diversity of the local varieties” – Masterclass presented by Cezar Ioan & Dilyan Kolev (Saturday, September 27th, 12:00 - 13:30)
  • 🍷“Opportunities for wine tourism combining Bulgaria & Romania”- Masterclass presented by Carmina Nițescu & Aneliya Hristova (Saturday, September 27th, 15:00 - 16:30)

The masterclasses are primarily aimed at those who want to learn about local varieties (Romanian and Bulgarian) and the opportunities for wine tourism in both countries. Both masterclasses will include a tasting of wines from Romania and Bulgaria.

Tickets for wine tastings at the festival are available here, and additional information about the event can be found on the Romanian Facebook event and the English Facebook event.

If you want to attend one (or both) of the Masterclasses the price is 40 leva/person and to have access to the tickets please send me an email at carmina@winesday.ro. Places at the Masterclasses are limited, require prior registration and I have to check the availability when I receive your request.
